From Lab to LinkedIn: Visible Science Needs Visible Women

Sina Stephan
DGM-Inventum GmbH (DE)
The Women’s Lunch aims to encourage female researchers to increase the visibility of their research and actively engage in public scientific communication.
In materials science and engineering, a large part of research communication still takes place primarily within the scientific community. At the same time, digital platforms such as LinkedIn are becoming increasingly important for:
The session will explore how researchers can make use of these opportunities and why personal visibility is becoming an increasingly important element of scientific communication.
Sina Stephan is Head of Communications at the German Society for Materials Science (DGM), where she is responsible for the society’s public relations and communication activities, including conferences, initiatives and strategic outreach.
Her work focuses on strengthening the visibility of the materials science community and supporting communication between research, industry and the broader public. Prior to joining DGM, she was involved in international science communication as part of the former Federal Ministry of Education and Research initiative “Research in Germany”, where she worked on promoting German research internationally. In addition to her work in science communication, she has also been involved in political communication, managing social media campaigns for a member of the German Bundestag. Her experience across science communication, digital outreach and political campaigning informs her perspective on how expertise becomes visible in public spaces.
Participation is free of charge. Participation is reserved for registered female conference participants. For planning purposes, female conference participants are kindly requested to register via this link.

Further Perspectives within Women@DGM:
During the 20th International Conference on Aluminium Alloys (ICAA20) in Berlin and online, Women@DGM will also host a Women’s Evening, bringing together female participants for an open exchange on gender equality, career paths, and professional experiences in the field of aluminium and aluminium alloys.
At first glance, these two formats may appear to address different aspects. However, both events share several common pillars, including navigating expectations, strengthening professional positioning, and making informed decisions about visibility and engagement in academic and industrial contexts.
Participants of both formats are invited to continue the exchange in a joint Women@DGM Christmas Lunch Talk, where perspectives from ICAA and MSE will be brought together. The event is planned for the Christmas period. The exact date will be announced.
